https://cliffhouse.com/bistro/ Place: the Bistro Restaurant at Cliff House Location: 1090 Point Lobos (at the end of the Earth/Ocean Beach) Hours: open for breakfast Monday - Saturday at 9:00am, Sunday at 8:30am Meal: Thick Sliced Sourdough French Toast ~ maple syrup, crisp bacon (once again, they were nice enough to substitute the dead, decaying crispy porky-butt bits with some of their very good breakfast roasted potatoes), powdered sugar, and fresh apple compote; a basket of three (3) (World) Famous Cliff HousePopovers(!); and a glassa Cliff House Classic Bloody Mary ~ Skyy Vodka, house mix of tomato juice/chili sauce/clam juice (much like the dead, decaying crispy porky-butt bits, I made sure to request the drink without this item; besides, just what kinda satanic juicer/blender would be used to make this un-dogly ingredient?!)/horseradish (this came with a neo-retro paper straw; hence, the opening query and the following EweToobular song)
[1] As has been the norm for several years now, to close-out the mid-Spring workout of my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, I returned to the Bistro Restaurant at Cliff House (see previous 'blog-entry from Sunday, January 27th, 2019).
I had arrived at the Cliff House about twenty minutes before they were scheduled to open, so, to kill some time ("I swear it was in self-defense, your Honour!"), I decided to walk around the building to ward off the (extra) breezy and cold(-ish) weather this morning. I was pleasantly surprised by the sight of several large pods of Pelicans flying in nice Military V-formations (in honour of the Memorial Day weekend, perhaps?). Even with my sojourn around the perimeter of the building, I still ended up being the second "group" in line waiting. Because they were a little late to open this morning, I got to talking to the three people in front of me and one of the nice ladies even invited me to join them this morning for breakfast. I politely declined, but told them to try and get the "The Wizard of Oz" table (where there are autographed photos of both Frances Gumm and Francis Phillip Wuppermann on the wall over a specific table ~ this was also the same table at which I sat on my previous visit), and, as luck would have it, they were seated right at that table, too!
(Ooopsie! Looks like the Cliff House needs to House-train their pets.)
This drink was a veritable meal unto itself. It included the compulsatory celery stalk along with a pimiento-stuffed olive, a small Hungarian chilli (or close enough for varietal purposes), and a wedge of lime. It was already pleasantly spicy enough that I did not need to pep-it-up any with any shots from my own hot sauces.
After twenty-five-plus years of eating at the Bistro Restaurant at Cliff House now, this might be only the second time that I have ordered this dish. Trust me, this was a major oversight on my part (perhaps, my breakfastary vision has been a bit myopic). This is a very good version of French toast, and by using thick slices of local sourdough, it not only gives it a distinctive flavour, but does not become over-soggified (it's a real word... look it up!) by the eggy-batter. Unfortunately, I think that this meal may have been a bit of a carboverload; what with the three (World) Famous Cliff HousePopovers(!), French toast, potatoes, and I am sure that there were some superfluous carbohydrates in the Bloody Mary, too. the Bistro Restaurant at Cliff House only has Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) for use as a condimentary supplement. I used some of my own Peaks of Otter PeppersInca GoldHot Sauce (Thanks,Cindy & Greg!) on the potatoes and a few grinds of my grains of paradise grinder all over the potatoes... and a bit on top of the French toast, too. (Do not judge me for my taste-quirks! At least I did not use any of the hot sauce on top of the French toast... however, I did give it a thought as mango and pineapple are ingredients in that hot sauce, and might very well have complemented both the maple syrup and the apple compote.)
Hollywoodland Spotlight of the Day Although I did not score "the Wizard of Oz"-table myself, on the wall over the far side of my table was an autographed photograph of George Raft. Of course, George Raft was best known for his portrayal of gangster-toughguys in many movies in the 30's and 40's. He also happened to play a major role in one of my All-Time Favourite Movies of All-Time ~ "Some Like It Hot"[2]. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0706368/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1 Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Thick Sliced Sourdough French Toast ~ 7.0; Cliff House Classic Bloody Mary ~ 7.2; (World) Famous Cliff HousePopovers(!) ~ 8.2 ___________________

http://www.lalesf.com/ Place: LaLe Location: 731 Irving Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues) Hours: breakfast and/or "Brunch" are served daily at 8:00am Meal: Toronto (Benediction) ~ ham (where I, of course, went sans le m*udit jambon, ya hoser!), grilled tomato, spinach, housemade (well, restaurant-made) English muffin topped with poached eggs, Hollandaise sauce, served with potatoes; and, to drink, a glassa Homemade (again, restaurant-made) Strawberry Lemonade
(Yeah, neither one of these EweToobular videos really has anything to do with Toronto[2], or Turkey, or tulips [or racist chickens, even]; they just happened to be playing both of these songs [and back-to-back, too] on the house-stereo [restaurant-stereo, whatever] this morning.) In rounding out (diamonding off?) the late springtime workout of my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, I once again went back to LaLe (see previous 'blog-entry from Sunday, January 20th, 2019) for breakfast this morning. One thing that I noticed right away before entering the restaurant this morning was "Wha' happen'd to their sign?!". They had just put up a newer(-ish) sign the last time that I ate there and, as can be seen in the above photo (or, actually can not be seen), it is now missing. I meant to ask one of the workers while I was there what happened to it, but I completely forgot while I was busy enjoying my meal. I am sure that it will reappear on my next visit (and, by which time, I will have completely forgotten that it was missing right now). After several many visits to this restaurant, there are not several many items left on their menu that I have not already had, but a few last items that I might want to try are: Fennel Cabbage Salad ~ with green and purplecabbage, fresh fennel, apples, arugula (if possible, I would see if they might be able to add a poached egg atop the pile o' rabbit-food to standardise it breakfastarily) or I just happened to notice this morning (and it is only showing on their printed menu and not their online menu for some reason) that they are now offering four or five different Frittatas; I will probably check one of those out on my next visit (and try to remember to take a photo of the list on their menu, too). Additionally, I could have also re-went with either Dutch Baby Pancake (however, as they say in Latin, empty cavities: these can take 20-25 minutes to prepare, seriously; this dish is really worth re-ordering; and I had the time to kill, but felt like "savoury" over "sweet" this morning) or Creamy Breakfast Polenta. Both of these were written on the weekend specials chalkboard outside by the front door.
My main reason for going with the "Toronto" locale (but probably not lo-cal) Benediction this morning was that earlier in the week Your 2018 World Championship Boston RED SOX just finished a successful (if not rather dubious) Four-Game Series in the Northern Exposure town of the same name. (If only they offered a Benediction named "Hous-town".) So, this was basically your standard "Eggs Florentine" just with the addition of grilled tomatoes. However, a few of the standouts here were that they used sautéed fresh baby spinach and their own housemade (restaurant-made, whatever) English muffin, which really makes a World of difference (Sorry, Mr. Thomas, these are just much better'n your faux-crumpets things.). For condimentary supplementation, LaLe had both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce. Once more, I just used some of my own Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!) on the potatoes and some Tijuana Flats Tex-MexSmack My *ssand Call Me Santa (Thanks,Rick!) on top of both eggs (Hollandaise sauce is generally okay, but it can always use a notch or two kicked up its *ss). Plus (and this is a very note-worthy "plus"), they offer two homemade (... whatever-made... ) jams/jellies (usually an orange marmalade and a strawberry jam) for use on all the tables. Unfortunately for me, there was nothing on which to use them this morning. So, for good (future) measure, I bought one jarra strawberry jam to take-with (I had bought a jarra orange marmalade during my previous visit and it is just about used-up, anyway). Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Toronto (Benediction) ~ 6.4; Strawberry Lemonade~ 6.8; (Your 2018 World Championship) Boston RED SOX ~ 139-24 (well, that is my prediction for the 2019 Season and I am stickin' with it... until it changes again) ___________________

https://www.eatsrestaurantsf.com/ Place: Eats Location: 50 Clement Street (on the corner of 2nd Avenue) Hours: open Monday - Sunday at 8:00am Meal: Divorced Eggs ~ sunny up eggs with half red sauce and tomatillo sauce, ricotta salata[1], black beans with pepper Jack cheese[2], grilled tortillas, and roasted potatoes; and, to drink, a glassa Power C ~ a mixture of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit juices
("Before"... "After"... whatever. Unseasonable [and mostly unwanted] rain is still rain.) Because I am still running through my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, and today is also the 108th annual running of the Bay-to-Beerin San Francisco, and it had been raining earlier for most of the morning, I wanted to keep it as local as possible and not have to deal with any traffic that may have been caused due to all of that. So, I simply returned to Eats (see previous 'blog-entry from Saturday, January 19th, 2019) for breakfast this morning. Since I last ate at Eats, there are brand new (retractable) awnings outside on both the Clement Street-side and 2nd Avenue-side sidewalk seating areas. I probably coulda even sat outside if I really wanted to, as the rain had already ceased from the earlier morning deluge and did not resume until much later this afternoon. However, I had arrived early enough this morning to still get a choice of a few different two-seater tables indoors, anyway. By now, I have more than worked my way through their entire menu and will be repeating most of the meals again. This is fine-by-me, because they have many good items from which to choose (even for st*pid vegetarian-types) and it will take me a few years to run through all of them again (even with three to four visits a year).
Oh, noooo!!! Sadly, it appears that along with their fancy new awnings outside, they have also changed the formula for their homefries. However, this would be in the opposite direction ("un-fancy old"?)... they are no longer including any roasted garlic cloves. (Well, there were none what-so-ever in my portion this morning, where there were normally at least three to six cloves.) I just hope this was an oversight for my meal and they do still include the roasted garlic cloves in their homefries. These were easily the best homefries in town with the garlic in them. Additionally, I did not notice any rosemary sprigs in the potatoes either. (Hmmm?! Maybe to be able to pay for their fancy new awnings, they had to cut back on a few other important items.) Anyway... thankfully, the eggs dish was still mighty tasty itself. With the salsa roja, salsa verde, and grated white cheese (ricotta salata) on top, the colours sorta reminded me of la Bandera Mexicana, Antonio. As far as condimentary supplementation goes, Eats offers the full Standard San Francisco Triumvirate of Hot Sauces (Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce [Original Red Sauce], Cholula®Hot Sauce [Original], and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce); plus, El Yucateco® three ways (Salsa Picante Roja de Chile Habanero, Salsa Picante Verde de Chile Habanero, and XXXtra Picante Salsa Kutbil-Ik® de Chile Habanero). I still went with some of my own Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!) on the potatoes and some H*ll's Kitchen®Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce (Thanks, Mom!) on the black beans. Both of which ended up being superfluously supplemented. I liked their salsa roja better than their salsa verde (which was tomatillo-based, and plenty good enough all on its ownsome) and happened to mention it to one of the server-lady persons, so she went back and brought me out a whole 'nother small ramekin of salsa roja, which I proceeded to dump on top of the one egg that already had salsa roja on it, the potatoes, and the black beans. (another, not really such a) Strange Coffee Interlude Before heading out for breakfast, I had prepared myself a mighty fine cuppa Bettys - Java Kalibaru[3] (Thanks, Cindy & Greg!). Now, not that I really needed another cuppa after breakfast (Does anybody truly need another lung-full of oxygen more than once a day?!), but when I got home I made myself yet another cuppa the same stuff (and once more prepared via the single-cuppa drip/pour-over method). The main reason I decided to "risk" drinking two cuppas-a-day was that, after breakfast, I once again strolled through the Clement Street Sunday Farmers Market and picked up a few interesting fresh baked-goods junk. For a mid-morning after-breakfast snack (and, because of which, I had to completely skip any lunch), I went with a Cardamom Puff purchased from Portside Bakery (outta Sausalito-town). The best way to describe this was a roundish croissant (about the size of a very large apple) filled with a cardamom custard. The cardamom custard was awe-some and really complemented (or vice-the-versa) the cuppa Coffee. So, it totally made it worth the second cuppa... even if I cannot get to bed until really late tonight... like, say, 10:30pm. I also made the second cuppa in my brand-spankin'-new "Eats" mug that I had just purchased this morning after breakfast. (I already have two "Dottie's True blue café" mugs, so I figured I would try to collect one mug from each of the other restaurants in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation... if possible; that makes two down and only three to go). https://www.bettys.co.uk/java-kalibaru-single-origin-coffee http://portsidebaker.com/ https://agriculturalinstitute.org/directory/listing-details/clement-st Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Huevos Divorciados ~ 7.0; Power C ~ 6.7; Cardamom Puff ~ 7.8; BettysJava Kalibaru ~ 7.4 ___________________

For a posh British tearoom kinda place, Bettys really does a great job with their Coffees, too. The Coffee is always top-notch and only costs about the same as the swill you can get at that St*rbucks place. This blend/roast is priced at £5.95 for a 227g bagga; with today's exchange rate, that equates to about $15.16/pound (that would be 'mercian-style measure of weight "pound", not the Britishlander-style monetary unit "pound").
https://www.ellassanfrancisco.com/ Place: Ella's American Kitchen Location: 500 Presidio Avenue (on the corner of California Street) Hours: open for "Brunch" Saturday & Sunday at 7:00am Meal: (the simply-enough named) Fried Egg Sandwich ~ Cheddar cheese, baby arugula, avocado, potato bun, served with French fries (but they let me substitute those with their country potatoes); and, to drink, a Ginger Orange Juice Punch
While still running through my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, I returned to Ella's American Kitchen (see previous 'blog-entry from Sunday, January 13th, 2019) once again. I have had Ella's in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation now since at least the year 2000. As far as any other good, fresh, new ideas go for breakfast for me... I think they just dun runned out! There really are only five or six viable options on their current menu for st*pid vegetarian types and I have had all of those now. I do like their new earlier opening hours and that they now have two locations in town; however, with the new ownership and menu changes, there are less items for me from which to choose. I used to like that their old weekend "Brunch" menu would always change seasonally and always offered new choices and taste experiences. Sadly, it looks as though it might be time for Ella's to be retired (she's too old to be DFA-ed) from my Breakfastary Starting Rotation and to possibly make a September Call-up... probably either Home Plate (they offer many good/great options [Can you say "Dulce de Leche Pancakes" and fried Brussels sprouts?!]; however, they are a bit further away than most of the other restaurants currently in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation), 6th & B (they also have many good options and are a lot closer, but are just not quite as good as Home Plate), or maybe even Marla Bakery Restaurant (this place is very local for me ~ within walking distance; their fresh baked goods are top-notch; however, they do not really offer a lotta items from which to choose either; plus, they do not start serving "Brunch" until 10:00am on Saturday and Sunday). Oh, well... we shall see.
That red-nosed freak only wishes his lame-o Eggamuffin was this good! (And Ray Crock probably thought that "Arugula" [baby or adult] was just another island in the Lesser Antilles.) Sure this was "just a fried egg sandwich", but I liked that it had lotsa avocado (easily half of an avocado berry) on top of it and the potato bun really added to the whole packackage. If I had one minor quibble (a "quibblette", perhaps?), though, it was that the "lotsa avocado" could have been sliced a little thinner and not made the sandwich quite so clunky (so that would be a "plus by minus"). Ella's American Kitchen has for use in the way of hot sauce condimentary supplements both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce. I used some (sparingly, this one is a bit more picante than a lot of my other hot sauces) of my own Punch Drunk™Chocolate Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce (Thanks,Sean!) on the potatoes and some Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Cindy & Greg!) inside the sandwich. Additionally, I used several grinds/twists of my portable grains of paradise grinder all over the potatoes and inside the sandwich (I will soon need to look into getting some more grains of paradise seeds as I am almost outta the batch that I found/bought last Summer on Cape Cod). (not really such a) Strange Coffee Interlude Long before even thinking about heading out for breakfast, I made myself a large cuppa (via the pour-over single cuppa drip-méthode) BettysJava Kalibaru(Thanks, Greg & Cindy!). I knew that this would be a far superior cuppa to anything that might have been offered at the restaurant, anyway. https://www.bettys.co.uk/java-kalibaru-single-origin-coffee Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Fried Egg Sandwich ~ 6.6; Ginger Orange Juice Punch ~ 6.8; BettysJava Kalibaru~ 7.4

Once again, I sat outside 'cause I could; it was still a bit chilly and un-sunny, though. This really did not matter much as I was wearing two sweatshirts and a t-shirt, anyway. Of course, I ended up being the only idiot seated outside the entire time that I was there... well, 'cept for one cool-looking English Bully named Patches Jr. and his human companion that were waiting for their "to go" order. (Okay, so the real reason that I sit outside is to see if I can sneak away before paying... however, that d*rn Chantal is always too crafty and brings out l'addition[4] just in time!)
I just want to say one word to you. Just one word. Are you listening? Velco®![5] Okay, so this really has nothing what-so-ever to do with my meal today, Baker Street Bistro, San Francisco, or breakfasts in general. I just happened to notice the other day on a piece of Velcro® strip that the name "Velcro®" was actually a ®egistered trademark word/product. That came as a surprise to me. Who knew you could trademark a fabric fastener? I wonder if Mr. George Zipp was ever rightly compensated for his metallic clasp locker invention...
I really do not have much else to add about this great breakfast ("Brunch", whatever) meal that I have not stated many times over already. This is simply one of my favourite meals in town. However, somehow, I always forget to request this dish "sans la nourriture minable de lapin"[6] in order to double-up on their great homefries. As far as condimentary supplementation goes, Baker Street Bistro offers only Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Sauce Rouge Originale). So, I just used some of my own Dragon's Lair Extra HotCayenne & Habanero Hot Sauce (Thanks, Mom!) on the potatoes and on la nourriture de lapin. I also made sure to use several grinds/twists of my portable grains of paradise grinder on top of the poached eggs, potatoes, and la nourriture de lapin-stuff. the WildParrots of San Francisco Interlude While sitting outside eating my breakfast ("Brunch", whatever), I only saw une paire de perroquets[7] (un petit pandémonium, peut-être?[8]) while I was eating. They were perched on top of one of the telephone poles in front of the restaurant a-chatterin' up a storm. I did hear many more in the neighborhood throughout the morning, though. There was also one very loud Mockingbird that stopped by earlier and was perched on the exact same telephone pole, Miss Finch. He went through his entire repertoire of calls and I tried to copy most of what he was saying. He just looked down at me as if I was crazy as a Jaybird... (There is no EweToobular juxtaselection [well, none of which I am aware] for these two songs, I just happen to really enjoy the music of Joan Anita Barbara Armatrading, MBE. The first song is not only my favourite song of hers, it is also one of my All-Time Favourite Rock-and/or-Roll[-ish] Songs of All-Time.) Because I could and because I can, I headed back over to Dottie's True blue café (see previous 'blog-entry from Saturday, January 12th, 2019) again for breakfast this morning. Even before seeing what was listed this weekend, I pretty much had my mind set on ordering whichever Frittata was offered on their specials chalkboard (the combination of items in today's frittata was the same as I have had a few times before). However, there were a few other items off (on?) the specials chalkboard that I coulda gone with (for?), too, ferinstance: Caramelized Onion, Gruyère, Sweet Potato Tart ~ with two eggs any style and fruit; Strawberry Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Stuff[ sic ] French Toast; or Peach Blueberry French Toast. Additionally, I have been known to make a meal outta one of their fresh-baked goods by adding a coupla eggs on the side to ovoid out the meal. The baked goods are truly that large that they can comprise mostly a halfa meal. Today's choices offered some that I have not sampled yet: Sweet Potato CaramelMuffin (this one intrigued me the most, and I really shoulda taken one of these to go home with me for later in the day!); CoconutChoco Chips Muffin; Lemon BlueberryCustard Cake; or Peach BlueberryCobbler Roll.
What can I really say about this meal? It was simply un stile italiano omelette with a buncha ingredients that I like... plus Feta! So, of course, I liked it. The cornbread-upgrade was a very wise decision (which I knew it would be). Not only is their cornbread top-notch, but the small ramekin of jalapeño jelly that comes with it is pretty d*rn tasty all on its ownsome. I made sure to use up the entire contents. Even though I was well-aware that Dottie's True blue café offers a diverse array of their own condimentary supplementation, once again, I just used a little of my own Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Cindy & Greg!) on the frittata and some H*ll's Kitchen®Whiskey Habanero Hot Sauce (Thanks, Mom!) on the potatoes. I also made sure to use several grinds/twists of my portable grains of paradise[1] grinder on top of both the frittata and the potatoes. the WildParrots of San Francisco Interlude While waiting in line before the doors opened, I saw a small pandemonium of seven of the feather-brained chatterboxes flying overhead heading south past Mission Street.
