(These two old guys do a pretty decent cover of Them's original Garage Rock classic.)
("Hey, Brian, just who the h*ck was that guy that introduced Laura Brannigan?"... Shirley, you must be joking. "And, Brian, what is up with the dazzling duo of 'Gloria' songs?"... Well, as far as I know, there are not any EweToobular juxtaselections between GreekScramblesand anyone named "Gloria". I just happened to be listening to a CD of Blues Traveler live performances [Thanks, Greg!] to and from the restaurant this morning and ol' Pop-man done sang that Them version of "Gloria" hisd*mnself. Of course, there is always the possibility that Sir George Ivan and/or little Johnnie Hooker are fans of Hellenic egg dishes, too.) I say this every time that I go to Just For You bakery & cafe (see last 'blog-entry from Sunday, April 1st. 2018... no foolin') for breakfast, if it was not all the way cross-town, it would easily be in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation. (And, yes, while the restaurant is still in the same city in which I live, even early on a Saturday morning with no real traffic of which to speak, it still took me about a half-hour to forty minutes drive over there.) Not that there was really anything that I considered ordering, but on the weekends, they offer several items on a separate printed Today's Specials menu. Off which, Today's offerings were: Blueberry Lemon Mimosa! (They added the explanation point there!) ~ Our 16oz mimosa with fresh blueberry lemonthyme syrup, blueberries & lemon wedge! Ask your server for other flavors! (See, they kinda like them explanation points!); Corned Beef Hash! (Again, with the explanation point?! Apparently, they do not have Elaine Marie Benes editing their printings!) ~ Homemade (well, bakery & cafe-made) Corned beef hash with peppers, onions & potatoes served with two eggs any style & choice of bread. (Hmmm?! Someone seems to have missed the explanation point at the end of that sentence!); Chicken Apple Scramble! (I will not even mention the addition of the explanation point here!) ~ Three egg scramble with chicken apple sausage, cherry tomatoes, arugula, mushrooms & blue cheese. Served with home fries or grits, and choice of homemade (again, bakery & cafe-made) bread. Clam Linguine! (Maybe the exclamation point is standard in Italiano!) ~ A homemade (you know the drill) wine butter sauce with clams, shallots, fresh basil, and tomato over linguine pasta, topped with parmesan cheese. Served with a small green salad.; and lastly(!) Pastrami Benedict! (Whatever!) ~ Hot Pastrami, spinach & tomato topped with poached eggs & hollandaise sauce over choice of bread (They do not specify here if it is "homemade" or not!). Served with home fries or grits.(!)
Having already run the gamut (and, I will have you know, that I did it in under 10-minute miles!) of viable st*pid vegetarian-friendly dishes off their standard weekend All-Day "Brunch" menu (which is really pretty extensive), I simple went with a choice that I knew was very good and that I liked a lot. Of course, once again, this was a great meal and a whole lotta food. The portion of homefries was enough to feed two people and the HUGE hunka cornbread was almost too much for me to finish it all (but I did!). If I had one minor quibble with this morning's meal, it was that the scramble-mess was a bit light on both the amount of Feta and Kalamata olives in it. As has been documented many times in the past (so I am not gonna do so again in the present), Just For You bakery & cafe offers one of the best selections of condimentary supplementation in the city. Oddly enough, even so, I used some of my own Old St. AugustineDatil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!) on the potatoes and some H*ll's KitchenSriracha Chili Hot Sauce (Thanks, Mom!) on the scrambled stuff. I also grinded several grinds of The Spice & Tea Exchange®Pirate's Bite Spice Blend (Thanks, Cindy!) all over everything. Glen Bacon Scale Rating: GreekScramble~ 6.6 (with the sufficient amount of Feta and Kalamata olives, I think that I normally would rate this as 6.7 or 6.8); Community Coffee® with roasted chicory ~ 6.8
Apparently, white Baseball players lives matter, too...[1]
http://www.justforyoucafe.com/ Place: Just For You bakery & cafe Location: 732 22nd Street (between 3rd and Tennessee Streets [hence the EweToobular juxtaselection of video #2 below]) Hours: open Monday-Friday at 7:30am, Saturday-Sunday at 8:00am for "Brunch" Meal: Big (and they are not exaggerating none there) Breakfast Burrito ~ 2 scrambled eggs rolled in a flour tortilla with black beans, Cheddar-Jack, green salsa (diced jalapeño & tomatillo), and your choice of bacon, chorizo, carnitas, or "veggie" (uggh!), and (optional) topped with homemade (well, bakery & cafe-made) Vegetarian Red Chili sauce; a side of Home Fries; and a cuppa (and 1-1/2 refillas) good N'Arlins-style Community Coffee® with roasted chicory https://www.communitycoffee.com/products/coffee/32-oz-ground-coffee-and-chicory
(The first two songs/videos are because today happens to be April 1st, no foolin' [plus, they just don't make Easter Carols like they did when I was a yid... er... I mean... when I was a kid]. I still have that Fools Gold album (as in vinyl, kids), too. I love the line in that first song: "Accept or deny your own existence, 'cause there's no way of living in between..." The last video is because Baseball has finally started-up again for the year... Yay! Baseball is Life... everything else is filler!)
I felt like making a bit of an Easter morn trek for breakfast this morning, so I headed "all the way over" to Just For You bakery & cafe (see last 'blog-entry from Tuesday, July 4th, 2017 ~ That'stheSpirit!). The first thing that entered my mind as I approached the building this morning was: "Woo-HOO!!! They finally got rid of that st*pid mini-parklet that was wasting space along the street." However, I overheard a few customers ask the waiter-server peoples about it and it has only been temporarily removed due to all the street construction in the neighborhood. Who knew I would actually be happy about street renovations?! It does not really matter, this place is just too good for me to boycott due to any support of a st*pid mini-parklet. I was verrrry pleased with my choice this morning. Otherwise, some of the other ideas on which I was debating: Greek Scramble ~ 3 eggs with Feta cheese, onions, spinach, tomato, and Kalamata olives (I have had this a few times before and it is always good, and Πάσχα is one of the biggest Greek religious holidays); (off the weekend "Brunch" Specials chalkboard) Blueberry Lemon French Toast (which sounded very intriguing, but I just had French toast yesterday and wanted something different this morning); or there is always their most-excellent Frittata of the Decade ~ a pan-fried Italian omelette with zucchini, onions, mushrooms, spinach, tomato, garlic, topped with Provolone (I have had this a few times and it is always great; several years ago they used to make this with Cheddar cheese instead of Provolone; however, some idiot Nose-E-Parker customer suggested on his silly li'l 'blog-thing that Provolone or Fontina cheeses would probably be a better match-up with the other ingredients and be more officially Italian frittata-esque; the owner of the restaurant [Hey, Adrienne!] actually read the comment and decided that I... er, I mean... that other idiot Nose-E-Parker 'blogster was right; I can not believe that anyone [other than family and friends] really reads these silly li'l 'blog-things).
The name of this dish this morning was not an understatement in any way. This was an absolutely HUGE burrito. As best as I could tell, the additional "veggies" (uggh!) that were in it were spinach, zucchini, and (white) onions; all ingredients that I love, anyway. In the twenty-plus (possibly more) years that I have been going to Just For You bakery & cafe, I do not think I have ever had this breakfast burrito before. Now as good and tasty (and HUGE) as the burrito was this morning, the real "topper" (Get it? I topped the burrito with the sauce... whatever!) was their most awesome Vegetarian (not, "Veggie" [uggh!], thankfully) Red Chili sauce. It came in a medium-sized ramekin so that you could pour a little or a LOT (which is precisely what I ended up doing) all over your burrito. I have had this sauce once before, I believe, with their Huevos Rancheros. On a future visit, I will have to make sure to order something (even if it is just their homefries) that I can order more of the Vegetarian Red Chili sauce to dump all over the top. Heck, I would even dump it all over the top of their fresh-made beignets! See, it is exactly stuff like this that if this joint were not located "all the way over in Dogpatch" (seriously, it is at least a half-hour drive over there on city streets), Just For You bakery & cafe would easily be in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation (and probably at #2, just behind Dottie's True blue café). I probably shouldn't have ordered the side of potatoes, but they make very good homefries. I did force myself to finish everything. I can always skip lunch today... I have stated before many times here, Just For You bakery & cafe offers an impressive array of hot sauces; they have almost as many different bottles of hot sauces for use as condimentary supplements as I currently have in my refrigerator. Of course, the restaurant happens to be a lot larger and (unlike my refrigerator normally) has actual food in it. I did not need/use any of their selections this morning, though. I just used some of my own Palo Alto Fire Fighters XXX Ghost Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Brian!) on top of the homefries. Glen Bacon Scale Rating: (HUGE) Big Breakfast Burrito ~ 6.8; Vegetarian Red Chili sauce (all on its ownsome) ~ 7.4

1. Now this was a very interesting "find" this morning. They were playing Baseball-ese songs on KFOG this morning during my drive over and back to Dogpatch. The song "Ballad of Eddie Klepp" was one of them. I had never heard this story (or ballad) before. It is just one of the myriad of Baseball lore that seems to have been swept under (the back of?) the bus... http://library.la84.org/SportsLibrary/JSH/JSH1998/JSH2503/jsh2503g.pdf
http://www.justforyoucafe.com/ Place: Just For You bakery & cafe Location: 732 22nd Street (between 3rd and Tennessee Streets) Hours: open Monday-Friday at 7:30am, Saturday-Sunday at 8:00am for "Brunch" (they actually opened at 7:30am this morning; I was expecting them to be operating on a holiday/weekend schedule, though) Meal: Cherie's Home Fry Special ~ home fries topped with stir-fried veggies and Cheddarcheese, with two eggs over-medium laid[1] on top of the pile; and a cuppa (and one refilla) Dark Roast N'Arlins-style Community® Coffee with Chicory http://www.communitycoffee.com/products/coffee/12-oz-ground-coffee-and-chicory
(Today's EweToobular juxtaselections should truly be self-evident: it is a well-known fact that Bruce Springfield, Cindy Williams, and Ryan [no relation to John, J.Q., or Sam] Adams are all big fans of homefries [it is unknown what their opinions on "the vile weed" are, though].) It had been a little over a year since I last ate at Just For You bakery & cafe (see last 'blog-entry from Sunday, June 5th, 2016), so I figured it was about time for a return visit. I really do like this place and if it were (a lot) closer, it would easily be in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation. I have eaten there enough in the past that you would think that I would have tried all of their stupid vegetarian options already. However, there are still a few other ideas that I would like to check out (one of these days): (off their Today's Specials menu-insert) Red, White & Blue Waffle! (they actually added the exclamation point, not me!) ~ Belgian[2] waffle topped with fresh blueberries, bananas and a homemade (well, bakery & cafe-made) fresh raspberry sauce! (Again, the exclamation point was their doing!) Let your server know if you want whipped cream! (Well, duh! [And I am completely okay with the last exclamation point in that description!]); or (off the ¡Mexican Especiales [noted without an ending "!", I can only assume that they had run out of exclamation points by using them in the name of all the special dishes] section of both their Weekday Menu and Weekend Brunch Menu) Breakfast Burrito ~ 2 eggs scrambled with black beans, Cheddar cheese and green salsa (diced jalapeño & tomatillo) in a flour tortilla (I probably would have gone with the "with zucchini, mushrooms, onions, and spinach" option, and, if they would have let me, topped with some of their really tasty Huevos Rancheros Vegetarian red sauce HOT! [See? Another exclamation point! This is why they couldn't afford another "!"!]; don't worry, for those of you that do partake of the dead, decaying animal flesh, they have three other burrito options: "with bacon", "with chorizo", and "smothered in chili con carne" [by the way, all of these are noted ¡sin un signo de exclamación!]); or (off the Eggs, Scrambles, Omelettes, and More section of their Weekend Brunch Menu) Greek Scramble ~ 3 eggs scrambled with Feta cheese, onion, spinach, tomato, and Kalamata olives (this was to be my intended choice; I have had it before and really liked it, but I had never tried [that I can remember] the dish that I went with this morning). Additionally, for the meatetarians out there, (also off their Today's Specials menu-insert) they offered Pulled Pork Benedict! ~ Bbq pulled pork topped with two poached eggs & Hollandaise sauce over homemade (bakery & cafe-made, whatever) biscuits. Served with choice of home fries or grits.
Now in spite of the odious "veggies" wording in the ingredients list and especially the inclusion of a preposterous preponderance of the most spitefully odious "the vile weed", I really liked this meal. Fortunately, the other "veggies" (ugh!) on top of their really good homefries included: zucchini, red bell peppers, white onions, mushrooms, and spinach ~ all of which I really like. Once again, any time potatoes are the basis (and, in this case, also the base) of a meal, I will normally like it.
Just For You bakery & cafehas probably the best selection of condimentary supplementation (outside of my refrigerator[3]) of any restaurant that I can think of. They offer a virtual panoply of picante preferencias. I could list all of the bottles on their shelves... but I won't. I used some of their Cholula®Hot SauceChipotle on top of one of the eggs and some of my own Palo AltoFire Fighters XXX Ghost Pepper Sauce[4] on top of the second egg. I was going to use some of their Try Me®TigerSauce instead of one of the hot sauces that I had schlepped with me, but luckily I read the ingredients before pouring any out; it includes dead, decaying piscine junk (in the form of anchovies). Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Cherie's Home Fry Special ~ 6.8 (I am deducting 0.1 Glen Bacon Scale points due to the overt inclusion of "the vile weed", but I really liked it all still); Community® Coffee with Chicory ~ 6.9 ___________________
1. That is as in "placed (on top of... )"; these were not freshly ovulated by the neighborhood poultry in the kitchen area.
2. Here's a little-known Cliff Clavin-ism fact: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and little Benjy Franklin were all of Belgian descent. They originally were in favour of a Black-Yellow-and-Red coloured national flag instead of our current Red-White-and-Blue schemed Ol' Glory. They finally decided against it when they found it too hard to rhyme "Three cheers for the Black-Yellow-and-Red". (Hey! I don't make this stuff up. I read it on the Intro-Net, so it has to be true!) 3. Because inside my refrigerator it's way too cold and claustrophobic to eat breakfast (or "Brunch" even), anyway. 4. I forced... er... poured some of this hot sauce into a small plastic ramekin for my friendly waiter-server-guy person to try later when he had his breakfast break. I would really like to see more local restaurants offering this great hot sauce. Hopefully he will inform the owner-lady person, Adrienne, about how tasty it truly is so that she might procure some for customers to use in the restaurant (bakery & cafe, whatever).
http://www.justforyoucafe.com/ Place: Just For Youbakery & cafe Location: 732 22nd Street (between 3rd and Tennessee Streets) Hours: open Monday-Friday at 7:30am, Saturday-Sunday at 8:00am Meal: Frittata of the Decade ~ a slow pan-fried Italian omelette with zucchini, mushrooms, onion, garlic, spinach, & tomato, topped with Provolone cheese[1] (served with home fries or grits, and your choice of homebaked white, whole wheat, or cinnamon-raisin toast, cornbread, scone, biscuits, English muffin or gluten-free toast); and a cuppa (and two refillas) of whatever the house Coffee may have been
(Today's EweToobular juxtaselection is simply a reference to how Dogpatch is a new up-and-coming gentrificated neighborhood and that I got the same meal that I had there a few years back now.) I had planned on getting back to Just For You bakery & cafe(see last 'blog-entry from May 25th, 2015) last weekend for a Memorial Day breakfast (this had been my routine for a few years prior), but I had a "vision problem" last Monday and "just couldn't see myself" driving all the way over to Dogpatch and back. I sucked it up and did so today, though.
("But, Brian, what's the big deal? Isn't this restaurant still in San Francisco proper?"
Well, yeah, but Dogpatch is about as far away from the foggy ol' Outer Richmond as you can get, and it took me about a half-hour [probably more] drive to get over there and the same amount of time getting back. I hate to drive almost as much as I hate to cook for myself.
If I could only afford a chauffeur, I would have him cook for me instead...) This place is certainly a great breakfast destination. If it were closer (a lot!), I would definitely have it in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation. They offer many great breakfast (and, in the case of their weekend menu, "Brunch") ideas from which to choose. I was thinking about getting the Greek Scramble (3 eggs scrambled with Feta cheese, onion, spinach, tomato, and Kalamata olives) again, but I just had that one two visits back (not that there is ever anything wrong with a Feta-and-Kalamata olives choice). They make a great version of Huevos Rancheros (2 eggs any style on a tortilla, smothered in special sauce, black beans and melted Cheddar cheese; they offer this with a choice of "yer poison": Red meat sauce, Vegetarian red sauce, or Hatch, New Mexico green chili sauce [made with dead, decaying poultry stock, unfortunately]). They also offer a changing weekly (weekendly?) printed addition to the menu. Today there were five additional items on it; however, I suppose the only viable option for stupid vegetarians was Chicken Shiitake Omelet (three egg omelet stuffed with grilled chicken, shiitake mushrooms, cherry tomato, & Swiss Gruyère cheese; which I would have ordered less the offending foul fowl-stuff).
I have had this same frittata a few times there now and knew that it was a stella' choice, Mrs. Kowalski. This was made with lots of good zucchini-stuff in it; plus, the Provolone was melted nicely on top (probably with the aid of a salamander). I think that this meal could easily be re-named "Frittata of the Century" ~ not only because it it a very good frittata, but the same item has been on their menu since the last decade already. For my side and toast choices, I went with home fries and cinnamon-raisin bread toast (they make all their own baked goods and breads, another big plus). However, another good combination (for those of you that are gluten-intolerant [or just have a dislike for wheat in general]) might have been grits and cornbread (which I heard someone else order after I did; oh, well... next time). As for their Coffee, I am not sure which brand they are now serving. I don't think that they offer the good N'Arlins-style Coffee (which was made with roasted chicory) any longer. They did ask if I wanted "Dark or Light Roast", so I went with "Dark", of course. It was a nice, strong blenda whatever it was; I liked it well enough for three cuppas. I never got around to asking which specific brand it was, though. Oh, well... next time, too. Just For Youbakery & cafe really excels with its condimentary supplements. They offer the Standard San Francisco Triumvirate of Hot Sauces(Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce [with four versions: Original Red Sauce, Chipotle Sauce, Green Jalapeño Sauce, and Habanero Sauce]; Cholula®Hot Sauce; and Tapatio®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce); plus, several other different brands of hot sauce. I used some of my own Lucky Dog Hot Sauce Medium Fire-Roasted Pepper Sauce (as this was a breakfast in Dogpatch, I figured that made for the best condimentary juxtaselection). So, I ended up getting back to Just For Youbakery & cafe just a week late (which beats "weak Coffee", any day). Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Frittata of the Century ~ 7.5 ___________________ 1. Their on-line menu still shows the cheese variety as "Cheddar" on the "Weekend 'Brunch' Menu" section; however, they changed the cheese to Provolone several years back at the suggestion of some Nosey Parker 'blog-ster*. Of course, with the other ingredients in the frittata (and seeing as "frittata" is "a slow pan-fried Italian omelette"), Provolone or Fontina make much more sense as a complementary fermented curd choice, anyway. Well, I'm afraid we don't get much call for Cheddar 'round Dogpatch, Mr. Wensleydale. *(And I know for a fact that I was the responsible [or irresponsible] party because the owner, Adrienne [Yo, Adrienne!], had replied to me on this silly li'l 'blog-spot about my suggestion when I did so.)
"And another thing. Don't ever kid yourself about loving some one. It is just that most people are not lucky enough to ever have it. What you have with Maria, whether it lasts just through today and a part of tomorrow, or whether it lasts for a long life is the most important thing that can happen to a human being. There will always be people who say it does not exist because they cannot have it, but I tell you it is true and that you have it and that you are lucky even if you die tomorrow." ~ Ernest Hemingway, For Whom the Bell Tolls (Whoever said ol' Ernie wasn't a romantic?! As for the answer to the title: "it tolls for thee".)

(There is no real EweToobular juxtaselection between these songs and the restaurant. I had just posted two Wild Colonials songs on Saturday and felt like doing another. These are two versions of the same song; I actually prefer the instrumental version. It was used in the 1995 movie "The Last Supper". Which, of course, starred "Survivor" alumnus Jonathan Penner… as well as some other lesser-known actors and actresses like Cameron Diaz, Bill Paxton, Jason Alexander[1], and others.) It's been about (well, exactly) two years since I last ate at Just For Youbakery & cafe (see last 'blog-entry from May 27th, 2013). I figured it was about time for another visit. Even if they do have a stupid parklet out front.
At least it is just a one car-length wastelet. As far as these parking obstructions go, it's a nice (little) one, at least. There are two wrought iron benches on either end and one small, round table for two. I don't know if there is actual table-service out there, but it could be a nice spot to sit in while waiting for a table during a busy day (today was only about 75% full inside that early on a holiday morning, but I have seen a line out the door on Saturday mornings). In addition to a very decent standard/weekend breakfastary menu, they have a "Daily Special' menu that can change seasonally. Today it included: Special Scramble! (three egg scramble with Longanisa sausage, white onion, mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, & Swiss cheese; I could have always ordered that without the sausage stuff ~ Longanisa or not; by the way, they added the "!" to all of these specials!); Belgian Waffle! (Belgian waffle topped with a homemade chocolate sauce, fresh strawberries, & powdered sugar); or Smoked Turkey Benedict! (turkey & sautéed spinach topped with poached eggs & Hollandaise sauce over choice of bread; this would not be a very good choice for any stupid vegetarian-type persons or anyone that is trying to cut down on their daily intake of smoking turkeys[2]).
This scramble dish had lots of Bleu cheese (which is either a good or bad thing, depending on your take of this stinky, moldy cheese; I like it, of course). This was kind of a strange combination, but it all worked for me… in a strange way. The artichoke hearts were the brined, not marinated, version, which is always the best kind for any scrambles or omelettes. I went with homefries instead of "greets" as my side choice . I also chose cinnamon-raisin toast as my homebaked (restaurant/bakery-baked, whatever) bread choice (and it was a nice extra-thick slice, too; I was asked if I wanted one slice or two and was glad that I only got the one). After I had already eaten about half of my meal, I overheard one of the waiter/server-person guys say that they offer two different types of scones: apple or cherry… next time I am getting one of those for sure (if I remember, that is). Not everyone likes their Coffee à la N'Arlins (where it is made with roasted chicory added), but I rather like it, and usually only get it at N'Arlins-style joints, anyway. Just For You offers a fine array of condimentary supplementation. In addition to the Standard San Francisco Triumvirate of Hot Sauces (that would be: Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce [Original Red Sauce], Cholula®Hot Sauce, and Tapatio®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce), they always have a few other interesting choices. Today there were: Tabasco®Brand Green Pepper Sauce (made with green jalapeños); Crystal®Louisiana's Pure Hot Sauce; Huy Fong Foods, Inc.Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce; and Chef Michael's "Ruin Your Day" World's Hottest Pepper Sauce. I used just a bit of the "Ruin Your Day" on a small area of the pile of homefries. While they may claim that this is the "World's Hottest Pepper Sauce", that is really a bit of a stretch. Albeit, this is very spicy, but I have had several others that are much hotter still (and may or may not have killed an innocent, unsuspecting Korean waiter-dude). This is one of those hot sauces that is mostly all heat and not as much flavour; this is due to one of the main ingredients being capsaicin extract. I also used some of my own The Wiltshire Chilli FarmMango hot chilli sauce on most of the rest of the homefries and some Hell Mouth on the entire scramble mess. (Thanks again for both of those and the other two bottles that I had already used up, Cindy & Greg! I am going to have to finally "retire" these two, even though they are both only at half-mast. The label stated to use within 6-8 weeks once opened, and I have more than doubled that expiry date already.) File under: "It's a small World… but I wouldn't want to paint it." As today is Memorial Day, I happened to be wearing my one article of clothing that I knew had an American Flag somewhat on it (I say "somewhat", as the design is on a five-petal White Rose of York and has half the Union Jackand half the Stars and Stripeson the petals ~ I will let you determine which flag goes with which country ~ with a White Rose of York at its center). This happens to be an RAF Menwith Hill/Harrogate[3] sweatshirt. It was a gift/souvenir that I had received on one of my many trips to North Yorkshire over the years (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!). Well, the manager-guy saw it and said that he used to work on the base; he had managed the Officers Club for several years there. A Side Sojourn to Japanese Tea Garden, Golden Gate Park
On my way home after breakfast, I decided to stop by Golden Gate Park and walk off breakfast a bit. I was originally planning on just traipsing around San Francisco Botanical Garden (formerly known as Strybing Arboretum), but noticed that the Japanese Tea Garden was also just opening up for the morning and I hardly ever traipse through there. (It's free on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday before 10:00am; whereas, San Francisco Botanical Garden is free all day long every day to San Francisco residents, and I can always traipse my heart out there on any other weekend.)
(This was my million dollar view ~ well, $7.00 view, before taxes ~ from my seat in the tearoom area.) No trip to the Japanese Tea Garden should be complete without stopping for some actual tea (Hey, it's in the name, fercryinoutloud!), so I had a cuppa jasmine tea (for the uninformed ~ or those just living in Omaha ~ "a green tea scented with jasmine flowers and boasts a slightly sweet flavor. Jasmine tea originated in China, but is now enjoyed by tea lovers throughout the world.") and a dorayaki[4] (which they describe as "a pancake like pastry, filled with red bean paste").
(Sharon, check out that ceramic mug design. Nice, huh?)
I am not sure, but this building is probably some kinda Japanese "weather" station. (I would expect that only ex-Russkij 208's might get that dumb joke… or maybe not even them.)
Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Bleu Scramble ~ 6.3; Jasmine Tea ~ 7.0; Dorayaki ~ 6.2; Japanese Tea Garden ~ 8.0 ________________ 1. (No official web-site.) Place: Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous Location: 699 22nd Street (at 3rd Street); phonicular contact: (415) 970-0750 Hours: open at 11:30am Wednesday through Sunday Ice Cream: Jasmine Calamansi[1] and Candied Orange Peel Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous happens to be directly across the street from Serpentine, but I had about forty-five minutes to kill before they opened, so I just walked around Dogpatch a bit.
Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous has been open for about three years now, but I have only been there a handful of times (or, seeing as this is Ice Cream we are talking about, a mouthful of times). I only learned of them about a year ago from a friend (Thanks, Lori!), and if they weren't located all the way over in Dogpatch, I probably would go there a lot more often. They usually only have ten to twelve flavours at a time available and rotate them weekly, or whenever they run out and make a different flavour. My one complaint is that they don't have a web-site to check which flavours are currently available; so you have to be surprised when you get there. It really is a "mooo"-t point, as they make excellent Ice Cream, and I have yet to try a flavour that I didn't like. The other flavours for the day/week this morning: Crown Royal, San Miguel Negra, Pumpkin, Earl Grey, Cookies & Cream, French Lavender, Chicory Coffee, Grasshopper, and Chocolate Choc Chip. I sampled both the Crown Royal and the San Miguel Negra. I couldn't really taste any Whisky in the Crown Royal, and probably wouldn't order it. The San Miguel Negramade a decent flavour of Ice Cream and I may have ordered it if I hadn't already ordered the other two flavours. I have tried and really enjoyed their Earl Grey before. I probably should have tried the Chicory Coffee, too, as I bet I would have liked that one a lot. As for the two flavours that I did get, they were both excellent. I think I liked the Jasmine Calamansi just a little bit more than the Candied Orange Peel, but I would order both of them again. And there is absolutely nothing that says that you can't have Ice Cream for breakfast (or "Brunch"). After all, it is made with eggs and milk (or cream), both of which scream "Breakfast!" to me, Mr. Cosby! Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Mr. & Mrs. Miscellaneous Ice Cream (in general) ~ 7.5 to 8.0 1. Calamansi is a sour citrus fruit indigenous to the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It is usually seen in its unripened lime green state. When left to ripen, it turns to a tangerine orange colour.
