https://www.ellassanfrancisco.com/ Place: Ella's American Kitchen Location: 500 Presidio Avenue (on the corner of California Street) Hours: open for "Brunch" Saturday & Sunday at 7:00am (supposably) Meal: Avocado Omelet~ avocado, Cheddar cheese, pico de gallo, country potatoes, toast (today, I went with sourdough-rye for a change); and a glassa Ginger Orange Juice Punch to drink
(Lady Ella and ol' Satchel-mouth hisself?! What could be better on a pastoral autumnal Sunday morn?) So, I went back to Ella's American Kitchen (see last 'blog-entry from Saturday, September 28th, 2019 ~ basically, yesterday) for breakfast (well, "Brunch", whatever) again this morning.
While avocado and Cheddar is a decent enough combination, I think that Monterey Jack[1] or queso fresco woulda been a mucho bettero estilo mexicano match-up. Thankfully, unlike yesterday's omelette, this one was more of a "right propa" omelette, Mr. Wensleydale, with the avocado (thickly) sliced up inside; plus, it had lots and lots of avocado in it ~ there musta been an entire avocado berry in it. Same as yesterday... as for any condimentary supplementation, Ella's American Kitchen has both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce on the tables. This morning, I used some of my own H*ll's KitchenGhost Pepper Hot Sauce (Thanks, Mom!) on top of the omelette (I only used about seven to eight drops of this, but even that ended up being about four to five drops too many... oooops!) and some Dat'l Do-it®Scorching Habanero Hot Sauce (Also, thanks, Mom!) on the potatoes (now this hot sauce was not nearly as hot as the first one and I did go a little [well, a lot] heavier-handed with it). Additionally, all over both the omelette and potatoes I used several grinds from my The Spice & Tea Exchange® Italian Street Fair Spice Blend (Thanks, Cindy!). Sadly, all good things must come to an end. After about twenty years of being in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, I think that this will probably be my last visit to Ella's American Kitchen as a member of that elite group. (I mean, even that Tim Bradley guy has to retire someday from those New Englander Patriotic Guys.) Since they changed ownership (about two years ago now?), the menu has just become much less eclectic for my tastes (and I like tasting eclecticity). Plus, they no longer do all their own baking of breads and pastries; this is a big MINUS in my book (or even in my 'blog-thing). I am sure that I will still get back there at least once a year, though. Come next year, I will probably be replacing it with another restaurant (and I am thinking that I am probably gonna call-up Home Plate). https://www.ellassanfrancisco.com/ Place: Ella's American Kitchen Location: 500 Presidio Avenue (on the corner of California Street) Hours: open for "Brunch" Saturday & Sunday at 7:00am (wellll... that is what is printed on their menus; however, according to their web-site, they either open at 7:30am [under "Locations"] or 8:30am [under "Menu"]; I just know that they were already open for business ~ with several other tables already having been served ~ at 8:15am when I arrived this morning) Meal: Mushroom Swiss Omelet~ sautéed mushrooms, Swiss, country potatoes, toast (I chose honey-oat); and a glassa Ginger Orange Juice Punch to drink
(Yes, I know it is a bit of a strange transition from the dulcet, soothing tones of Lady Ella to the raucous cacophony of those Aero-boyos, but keep reading and you will get the reason for the second EweToobular video. Maybe...) I went back to Ella's American Kitchen (see last 'blog-entry from Sunday, May 12th, 2019) for breakfast (well, "Brunch", whatever). It looks like Ella's Polk Street location has now (very recently) closed ~ circa September 24th or so. It had not been open for very long; it had only opened back in August 2018. I had only visited that spot once; this Presidio Avenue location is a lot closer and easier for me to get to, anyway (I actually found a legal parking spot right in front of the restaurant today).
In my opinion, Swiss cheese and mushrooms are always a good combination (well, that is, if you are not either lactose- or fungi-intolerant). This was a decent enough breakfast ("Brunch"... whatever) and there were a few pluses and a few minuses to it. Pluses: it had a whole lotta good, melty Swiss cheese inside; and there was a HUGE mess o' homefries on the plate. Minuses: the mushrooms were incorporated into the egg-mixture and not inside the omelette itself; and they no longer seem to be making their own breads (this is a major pity), and it was now just some plain ol' pre-made, sliced honey-oat bread. For condimentary supplementation, Ella's American Kitchen has both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce on the tables. I used some of my own Old St. AugustineDatil Pepper Sauce (Thanks,Greg & Cindy!) on top of the omelette and some Dragon's LairExtra HotCayenne & HabaneroHot Sauce (Thanks,Mom!) all over the potatoes. Additionally, all over both the omelette and potatoes I used several grinds of The Spice & Tea Exchange®Florida Sunshine Spice Blend (Thanks, Cindy!). (not really such a) Strange Coffee Interlude (Now here is where the above seemingly unjuxtaselectioned video comes into play.) Before even heading out the door for breakfast this morning, I made myself a single cuppa (prepared via the pour-over drip-method) Joey Kramer Rockin' & Roastin'® Coffee - Guatemala Medium Roast (Thanks, Kerry!). They have this labeled as a "Medium Roast", but it seemed almost like a pretty d*rn good Dark Roast to me. Needless to say, I liked this cuppa even more than the music of that noisy group from Massachusetts. ♪ "The Coffee kept a-pourin' all night long... https://www.itsjane.com/location/jane-on-fillmore/#breakfast/ Place: Jane~ on Fillmore Location: 2123 Fillmore Street (between California and Sacramento Streets) Hours: open daily from 7:00am Meal: Raw Sprouted Black Rice Porridge ~ almond and coconut milk, chia seeds, coconut crunch (which was basically granola and dried/roasted coconut meat), goji berries, fresh kiwi[1] (served warm upon request)[2]; a Citrus Brioche for starters; and, to drink, a cuppa their own Bread & Butter blend/roast Coffee (for some reason, this location does not do single-cuppa pour-overs like they do at their on Larkin Street location)
(I will let you try to decipher the hidden juxtaselection with this classic [but sounding overly corn-ballish today] 80's EweToobular song/video. And, no, it is not because Johann/János Weißmüller was a big fan of either goji berries or kiwi berries. [Although, I did not even consider the whole "Edgar (Raw Sprouted Black) Rice Burroughs" connection.])[3] To make it a compleat Jane kinda weekend (see 'blog-entry from just yesterday, Saturday, August 3rd, 2019), I went back to their on Fillmore Street location. Once again, I sat upstairs in the loft-area, overlooking the mounted Bison-head. (Jane, is that you?!) (Because I am basically lazy, I did a "cut-'n'-paste" job from yesterday's 'blog-entry, just deletising today's meal option.) There are still a few more good breakfastary ideas (even for st*pid vegetarian-types with reading-comprehension problems): (the simply-enough named) Egg Sandwich ~ on your choice of housebaked sourdough, multigrain bread or baguette with homemade tomato chutney and Cheddar cheese (where I would have to go with the "Add Avocado" option; ha! "tomato chutney" and "Cheddar cheese"... "What are two things you will never see or hear at Ronnie Mac's RainbowRoom? for $200, Alex." ); Avocado Mash ~ avocado, cracked black pepper, soft boiled egg, pickled shallot and jalapeño on house sourdough (basically your ubiquitous "Avocado Toast"); and Dragonfruit Smoothie Bowl ~ dragonfruit, pineapple, banana, ginger, coconutwater, blueberries, raspberries, hemp seeds, flax seeds, cocoa nibs, goji, mulberries (that oughtta be enough d*mn berries to hold over both Captain Parmenter and Maria Halle). ("Okay, Brian. We get that you are too d*mn lazy to actually re-type the items, but did you really have to include the same st*pid jokes in each description?" Well, yes, I really did have to!) Additionally, they offer a few different salads (not on the breakfast portion of the menu) that I am sure that I could have a poached/soft boiled egg added atop to make a bit more breakfastarily-sound. Ferinstance: Rainbow~ shredded carrots, cherry tomatoes, marinated kale, avocado, cucumbers, baby spinach, housemade hummus, tahini dressing (Hmmm?! Seems to me that their "Rainbow" is missing something yellow, blue, indigo, and violet, though); Freekeh ~ kale, sprouted mung beans and black lentils, currants, green onion, mint, sunflower seeds, cumin lemon dressing (just be forewarned, if I do ever order this salad, I will more than likely have to go with the titular joke "Get your Freekeh on!"; sorry, them is the rules); or Fiesta Rice Bowl ~ red rice, chipotle roasted carrots, black beans, avocado, red pepper, romaine, mango salsa (vegan) (Hmmm?! Looks like this salad has just as many colourscovered as their Rainbow salad; maybe they shoulda called this one their "MexicanRainbow" salad). (Thankfully, neither of these salads have any m*udits lardons listed as an ingredient for me to accidentally overlook.)
(Trust me, the Citrus Brioche really did taste much better than the cr*mmy photo above looks.)
Like yesterday's breakfast salad-thing, this was all pretty basic and simple. All in all, I liked it well enough. There was a decent amount of kiwi berries diced up on top as well as some goji berries. I hate it when "eating healthy" actually tastes good, too! (But, thankfully again, there were no hidden m*udits lardons for me to pick out this morning... ) The Coffee was also very good this morning. I have had their own blend/roast several times before, anyway. It is just not as flavourful as the Kenyan Coffee from yesterday morning, though. Because this was a sweet, not savoury, dish, I skipped any additional condimentary supplements. I did notice that this location offers both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce. (You know, I almost thought about using some of my new The Spice & Tea Exchange®Florida Sunshine [Almost thanks, Cindy!] spice grinder-upper-thing on it... almost... with its list of ingredients as "sea salt, orange zest, green peppercorn, ginger, lemon zest, lime zest, and rose petals" it really mighta notta been that bad of an addition.) St*pid, useless botanical pointer of the day: Like the goji berries in the dish, kiwifruit are actually berries, too. 2. Of course, I went with the warmed-up option, but not before giving the poor counter-lady person a bit of a hard time while ordering. Me: "... and the Raw Sprouted Black Rice Porridge, and a cuppa Coffee." Poor Counter-lady Person: "Would you like that warmed up?" Me: "Of course I would like my Coffee 'warmed up'. Even better, make it 'hot' if you can do so... " (I made sure to keep an eye on her while she was pouring my Coffee to make sure I did not get the deservedly-so "Friends"-type "sneezer". I have no idea what she told the kitchen-staff to do to my bowl o' porridge, though.) 3. Ha! I even still possess the Maxi-Single 45rpm (as in vinyl-record) version of this silly song.

(My initial thought was to use one of Shana Morrison's[1] cover-versions of this Sir George Ivan song, but I came upon this one in the same EweToob search and really liked it.) Because last week I ate at Taylor Street Coffee Shop again, I figured it was fitting that I should probably go through the litany of other restaurants in this local family-owned mini-chain of restaurants. Hence, next up was Sweet Maple(see last 'blog-entry from Sunday, October 15th, 2017). I think this was the second restaurant that they opened (possibly third), but it has been ensconced in the Lower Pacific Heights/ Japantown/Fillmore District triangle-area since 2010. Many of the restaurants in their mini-chain have the same or very similar dishes (just with different name-variations) and I have tried several of them already. There are still yet another few (specific to the Sweet Maplemenu, at least) other ideas that seem breakfastary worthy for me: Southern Benedict ~ chorizo (which woulda gone chorizo-no with me), cherry pepper, tomato, chipotle Hollandaise, served w/ potato medley (I have had their chipotle Hollandaise before and know that it is really good); Snowed Spinach Scramble~ baby spinach, Vermont Cheddar, Parmesan, served w/ potato medley and ciabatta au levain toast; or if I am the mood once again for something Sweet... Marnier ~ French toast: creamy Grand Marnier® (citrus) batter.
There is not really much to report about this dish. It was sweet potato pancakes in all its sweet potato-goodness and cinnamocity (yeah, it's not a real word, but neither is "cinnamony"). They have this listed on the menu as "Pancake" in the singularity, but it actually came as three (possibly four?) rather large (but, thankfully, sorta thin) pancakes; otherwise, with the side of potatoes, it woulda been wayyyy too much for me to finish. Not listed on the menu was that it also comes served with two types of berries (that would be blueberries and oranges to you botanical minded-types) and one not-a-berry (that would be strawberries to you in the botanical laity) on top. (However, I am not quite sure where in the fruit-world that sprig of fresh parsley may lay. In time, I am sure that Rosemary will sagely tell me... ) I saw on their menu that you could upgrade to something called "JD syrup". This intrigued me enough to ask what exactly that meant. Sadly, it was not a syrup tapped from juvenile delinquent maple trees in Vermont. However, I was ecstatic to learn that the "JD" actually stood for "Jack Daniels" and just had to try out that junk! Unfortunately, when they brought it out in a small syrup-pourer/carafe-thing, it was chock-full-o' crispy dead, decaying porcine-butt bits. The waiter/server-person guy forgot to mention to me that it included this item, and I had to end up going back to the "plain ol' 100% Vermont maple syrup" instead... As far as condimentary supplementation goes, Sweet Maple offers Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (both Original Red Sauce and Green Jalapeño Sauce), Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce, and Traina®Hot Sriracha Sun Dried Tomato Ketchup. I ended up using a goodly portion of the Sriracha Ketchup on the potatoes (and don't think the thought did not cross my mind to try some on the pancakes, too, Mr. Moses Harry Horwitz!). (yet still another not necessarily such a) Strange Coffee Interlude Sure, I coulda ordered a cuppa Coffee at the restaurant to complement my breakfast ("My, Miss Pancakes, you do look lovely this morning!"), but earlier in the morning I made sure to whip-me-up (well, technically, drip-me-down) an extra-fine cuppa Koa CoffeePlantation®100% Kona Coffee Grande Domaine Single Estate Medium Dark Roast!!! (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!)[2] This was actually from a Christmas gift, which I am finally getting around to using some of it up. Man, I wish I had known how d*rn good it was, because, trust me, it would not have made it past February! Besides, no matter how good the Coffee at Sweet Maplemight have been, I knew that (even with the way that I crummily make Coffee) this superior bean/roast could not be topped. In the past I had always had a lighter (as in "way too light") roast of Kona Coffee and was never very impressed with its flavour. However, I really like this Coffee so much so that I am claiming it as "My Favourite New Coffee of 2019" (and I truly believe that you will be hard pressed [or hard-percolated] to change my mind on this before year's end, anyway). To make this early morning cuppa even more early morning special, I drank it outta my "Breakfast of Champions"[3] mug (Thanks, Sean!), too. https://www.koacoffee.com/p/pure-kona-coffee/grande-domaine-vienna-roast-whole-bean-kona Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Sweet Potato Pancake(s) ~ 6.5; Koa CoffeePlantation®100% Kona Coffee Grande Domaine Single Estate Medium Dark Roast!!! ~ 7.7-7.8; "Breakfast of Champions" ~ 6.9 (the book; actually, I would have to rate the mug at 7.9) ___________________

While still running through my Breakfastary Starting Rotation, I returned to Ella's American Kitchen (see previous 'blog-entry from Sunday, January 13th, 2019) once again. I have had Ella's in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation now since at least the year 2000. As far as any other good, fresh, new ideas go for breakfast for me... I think they just dun runned out! There really are only five or six viable options on their current menu for st*pid vegetarian types and I have had all of those now. I do like their new earlier opening hours and that they now have two locations in town; however, with the new ownership and menu changes, there are less items for me from which to choose. I used to like that their old weekend "Brunch" menu would always change seasonally and always offered new choices and taste experiences. Sadly, it looks as though it might be time for Ella's to be retired (she's too old to be DFA-ed) from my Breakfastary Starting Rotation and to possibly make a September Call-up... probably either Home Plate (they offer many good/great options [Can you say "Dulce de Leche Pancakes" and fried Brussels sprouts?!]; however, they are a bit further away than most of the other restaurants currently in my Breakfastary Starting Rotation), 6th & B (they also have many good options and are a lot closer, but are just not quite as good as Home Plate), or maybe even Marla Bakery Restaurant (this place is very local for me ~ within walking distance; their fresh baked goods are top-notch; however, they do not really offer a lotta items from which to choose either; plus, they do not start serving "Brunch" until 10:00am on Saturday and Sunday). Oh, well... we shall see.
That red-nosed freak only wishes his lame-o Eggamuffin was this good! (And Ray Crock probably thought that "Arugula" [baby or adult] was just another island in the Lesser Antilles.) Sure this was "just a fried egg sandwich", but I liked that it had lotsa avocado (easily half of an avocado berry) on top of it and the potato bun really added to the whole packackage. If I had one minor quibble (a "quibblette", perhaps?), though, it was that the "lotsa avocado" could have been sliced a little thinner and not made the sandwich quite so clunky (so that would be a "plus by minus"). Ella's American Kitchen has for use in the way of hot sauce condimentary supplements both Tabasco®Brand Pepper Sauce (Original Red Sauce) and Tapatío®Salsa PicanteHot Sauce. I used some (sparingly, this one is a bit more picante than a lot of my other hot sauces) of my own Punch Drunk™Chocolate Ghost Pepper Hot Sauce (Thanks,Sean!) on the potatoes and some Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Cindy & Greg!) inside the sandwich. Additionally, I used several grinds/twists of my portable grains of paradise grinder all over the potatoes and inside the sandwich (I will soon need to look into getting some more grains of paradise seeds as I am almost outta the batch that I found/bought last Summer on Cape Cod). (not really such a) Strange Coffee Interlude Long before even thinking about heading out for breakfast, I made myself a large cuppa (via the pour-over single cuppa drip-méthode) BettysJava Kalibaru(Thanks, Greg & Cindy!). I knew that this would be a far superior cuppa to anything that might have been offered at the restaurant, anyway. https://www.bettys.co.uk/java-kalibaru-single-origin-coffee Glen Bacon Scale Rating: Fried Egg Sandwich ~ 6.6; Ginger Orange Juice Punch ~ 6.8; BettysJava Kalibaru~ 7.4

(Apparently, Janie's got quinoa bowls and muffins, too... I do not know if Abilene has a gun or not, or if Davie Alvin likes brussel[ sic and in minuscule ] sprouts as much as I do, but I just felt like adding this song today.) "Hey, Brian, what gives?! Didn't you just eat at Jane ~ on Fillmore (see last 'blog-entry from Sunday, April 7th, 2019) last Sunday?!" Yeah, well... I am trying something new. If I like a place and see that there is more than one decent meal offered for stupid vegetarians, I decided to go back on multiple (however, these may not always turn out to be consecutive) weekends. If you wanna see what other options that they might have to offer for stupid vegetarian-types, you can see what I listed in last week's 'blog-entry yerd*mnselves. (Like I have the time to cut-and-paste that junk here. [Buncha lazy b*stages!])
(Trust me, the photo used of the muffin was the best of the three that I took this morning. Maybe Jane can rename this particular baked-good: "Fresh Fruit Bokeh Muffin"?!) Quinoa ~ good! Sweet potatoes ~ good!! Kale ~ very good!!! brussel[ sic and in minuscule ] sprouts ~ very, very good!!!! And I was very happy to see that there was a ton of each in the bowl, too. The only thing that might have made this dish a little bit better was if the egg that was laid on top had been a soft boiled egg (which is offered on other dishes on the menu) or a poached egg (which I am not sure that they do offer). I did not bother to ask what they might have to offer in the way of any hot sauce condimentary supplements. In a valiant (but, at this point, a seemingly Sisyphean) effort to use up some more of my own hot sauces (yeah, there are still twenty-three d*mn bottles on my refrigerator door shelf) I simply used some of my own Old St. Augustine Snake Bite Datil Pepper Sauce (Thanks, Greg & Cindy!) on top of the hard boiled egg (once I had cut it in half) and generously ('cause that's just the kinda guy I am) all over the rest of the bowl, too.

(There really are no EweToobular juxtaselections here. I just heard that Dewey, Dan, Gerry, and Tim Pretty were all big fans of Shakshouka-type dishes. I think it comes from their Arabic/Mohammadist roots.) Because I wanted to hit a place that opened up pretty early for breakfast on a placid Sunday morn, I headed back over to Jane ~ on Fillmore (see last 'blog-entry from Saturday, July 22nd, 2017). I especially like that they are open up at 7:00am daily. This is very good for a mostly upscaley-kinda neighborhood; many of the other places along that area of Fillmore will not open until after 9:00am or later.
(There is really no reason for these two photos. I just liked how one side wall of the restaurant had floral wallpaper and the other was basic black-and-white striped.) I sat upstairs in their lofty space once again. This time I sat at one of the six stools at the front-facing counter overlooking the restaurant (and looking down on Mr. Bison, too). As this only makes the third time that I have eaten at Jane for breakfast (once at this location and one earlier visit at their Tenderloin location on Larkin Street), there are still many other good ideas from which to try and decide on future visits: (the now ubiquitous, but possibly soon to be extincted) Avocado Mash ~ avocado (nacherly), cracked black pepper, soft boiled egg, pickled shallot and jalapeño on house sourdough (I wonder if they would substitute that particular toast for their olive bread instead); Breakfast Frisee Salad ~ frisee, arugula, chive, lardons (which I would, of course, have lard-off), radish, rainbowcarrot(noted in the singularity for some reason, but I assume they actually include more than one colour of carrots), soft boiled egg, shallot vinagrette[ sic ], toasted baguette; Egg Sandwich ~ on your choice of housebaked sourdough, multigrain bread or baguette with homemade (well, Jane-made) tomato chutney and Cheddar cheese; Egg White Sandwich ('cause egg-whites matter, too) ~ egg whites, spinach and avocado with Provolone and a dash of sriracha served on your choice of housebaked sourdough, multigrain bread or baguette; Raw Sprouted Black Rice Porridge ~ almond and coconut milk, chia seeds, coconut crunch, goji berries, fresh kiwi (served warm upon request); Jane's Dragonfruit Smoothie Bowl ~ dragonfruit, pineapple, banana, ginger, coconut water, blueberries, raspberries, hemp seeds, flax seeds, cocoa nibs, goji, mulberries (I have no idea what this would all be, but it sounds kinda interesting); or Warm Quinoa Bowl ~ quinoa, roasted brussel[ sic and in minuscule ] sprouts, sweet potatoes, kale (where I probably would have them add a soft boiled egg in the mix to make it more breakfastarily sound). Additionally, they offer several other items at their Larkin Street location under the moniker Weekend "Brunch".
This Citrus Brioche was very good (just not anywhere as interesting as their Cardamom Lattice Bun that I had once before at their stand-alone bakery along Geary Boulevard). I ended up eating half of the brioche before the main meal was brought up to me and the other half after I had finished the meal to enjoy with the last of my Coffee. This dish was basically your Shakshouka/Shakshuka/Chakchouka/شكشوكة with black beans and Cheddar. I enjoyed it to the last drop... well, as best as I could. The olive bread toast that came with it was pretty d*rn tasty all on its ownsome and I probably mighta coulda used another slice of it with which to sop-up all the rest of the spicy tomato sauce. Of course, if they had given me two slices, I might not even have had to use any utensils to eat the meal (other than a knife maybe to cut up the baked eggs into scoopuppable[2] sized bites). As far as any condimentary supplementation that Jane might have had to offer, none were needed and none were used. Their spicy tomato sauce was good enough for me. (not really such a) Strange Coffee Interlude Me: Which roast of Coffee do you have today? Counter-lady/cash-taker person: I think it is a "medium roast"... (Me thinking: Ohhhh-kay! How the h*ck can you be workin' in a coffeehouse/bakery-type joint and not really know what kinda Coffee you are serving?! If you worked at Mickey-D's RainbowRoom, would you inform me that in your burgers "none of our meats are vegetarian"?! *sigh*) Me (instead): Thanks, that sounds good. I will have a cuppa that... For the record, Jane roasts their own Coffee locally somewhere in the Mission. I really need to check that out one of these days, it would be fun to see how that operation is done. Thankfully, their Coffee is always first-rate (even if it is of unknown origin to the workers there). The last time I ate there, they had a blend/roast called Bread & Butter; however, I am not sure if that is the only Coffee which they offer.
